For my significant project, I chose to research the controversial issue of regulations that are being placed upon the Maine lobster industry, in light of recent Right Whale deaths. Growing up, summers were busy with adventures on the water as my father taught my brother and I the ins and outs of lobstering. Since those days, lobstering has been a vital aspect of my life, and once I was given the opportunity to write about a topic of my choice, I knew I had to address the fight that Maine lobstermen have endured against conservation groups and state legislators. As mentioned, the deaths of the endangered Right Whales in Maine waters have sparked the implementation of costly regulations which severely handicap lobstermen’s ability to make a living. In my writing project, I discussed conservational group’s rationale and consequences of the imposed regulations on one of Maine’s oldest and most notorious industry. This essay was something I was passionate about, and it was a nice experience learning more about this predicament, as well as being able to portray my thoughts and opinions. I also might mention that I was inspired to write about this topic not only because of my feelings about the matter, but also my father’s, as he is still active in the lobstering community and even more passionate about the topic then I am.
